The same two African American Students’ Sophomore year. No new African American students admitted.

Aurelia Register, third African American student enters college.

Drewnell Thomas and Robert Pierce graduate and give an interview to the Campus.

Joyce Ann Joyce enters VSC.

Louis Dunbar is hired as the first African American Faculty member.

The Black Student League is formed on campus.

1970-1971
Joyce is named the first African American Annie Powe Hopper Award Winner. “Black Seminars” are offered on campus.

1973
After receiving an MA from University Joyce returns as an instructor in the VSC English Department among the first African American faculty at VSC.

Oct. 1973
Sophomore Skip McDonald appears on WCTV, "Midday Report" singing to promote Black Students League's "A Tribute to Billie Holiday".

Skip McDonald is the first elected homecoming queen who is African American.
